BHID is the first cranial fixation system based on shape memory materials. It is a cranial bone fixation system designed to be lodged in the burr hole which consists of upper and lower platforms located in the epicranial and epidural spaces, respectively, and bound by a Nitinol spring.
Nitinol is a nickel-titanium alloy with the following main features:
This product uses one of the characteristic features of the material (shape memory) in such a way that after the application of physiological warm serum (or waiting until the temperature of the patient reaches the implant) it returns to its original shape thanks to the memory property of Nitinol. As it is designed to always return to the minimum height, it places pressure on the bone flap and cranium and, as a result, the flap is immobilized.
