An independent test laboratory (Applus+ LGAI Technological Center; www.applus.com) performed mechanical tests on human cadaveric skulls in order to evaluate Cranial LOOP’s load-bearing properties, following the experimental set-up described in a previously published article (Lerch KD. Neurosurgery. 1999 Apr;44(4):902-5). Cranial LOOP’s results were obtained on an Instron stress-loading apparatus, at a defined displacement of 5mm/min.

The following graph shows the load-bearing behavior of five different cranial fixation systems. Results represent the load that is required to sink the bone flap 0.5, 1 or 2 mm, which is the maximum impression depth that should be tolerated in vivo. Cranial LOOP’s result corresponds to the lowest reading among the eight tests performed by the independent laboratory.

Graph_Load-bearing

The results of this study show that Cranial LOOP’s load-bearing properties are equivalent to those of other cranial fixation devices.
